Katarina Wit began skating at age five. Soon, her talents were evident and she was invited to Karl-Marx-Stadt's special school. It was here that she was introduced to the coach of her choice, Jutta Muller. The year that Witt made her breakthrough was in 1982 when she came second in the World Championships in Copenhagen. Since then, Witt's elegance and grace have caught the interest of all. Olympic victory at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt won a close battle to take home the women's figure skating gold medal. In a tighter competition afterward, she won her gold medal. She actually lost the free-skating competition, but earned the gold medal based on her performances during the compulsory figure and the short programme. Witt was the first repeated woman to win the women's figure skating after Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 after a successful career acting. People were captivated by her performance despite her having was seventh. It was in 1995 that Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
